Anal bleeding can signify an anal disorder,
but can also signify a colorectal disease,
such as large intestine inflammation, the presence of polyps, or cancer.

Bowel cancer can often be treated through endoscopic surgery.
However, this relies on the cancer being discovered early during a regular checkup.
Endoscopy examinations help in the early discovery of cancer, but are also useful in discovering inflammatory bowel disease.
We perform 20,000 examinations every year. Why not schedule your complete examination today?

Providing kind treatment to everyone who visits Matsushima Hospital

Matsushima Hospital has continued to provide specialized medical services for colorectal disorders from the very beginning, when it was founded as Matsushima Clinic by Senzo Matsushima in 1924.
Many people tend to leave hemorrhoids untreated for a long time, either out of embarrassment or under the assumption that the disorder is not life-threatening. Our mission is to provide these patients with accurate diagnosis and the best treatment to prevent relapses and anal function disorders.
A not-insignificant number of malignant colon diseases (such as rectal cancer) and other diseases including ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease can be discovered during proctology examinations. That is why we began providing examinations for the early discovery of bowel cancer in 1980 and opened Matsushima Clinic (a facility specializing in colonoscopy examinations) in 1987. We now perform thousands of colonoscopy examinations per year (13,312 in 2020). In order to handle the rapidly increasing number of endoscopy examinations, we opened Landmark Clinic in Yokohama Landmark Tower in 1993. We then opened Matsushima Clinic Shiodome in 2018 to provide even more convenience to patients.
Throughout 2022, Matsushima Hospital provided examinations for 88,544 patients with anal disorders, performed 9,544 surgeries, and provided 9,644 inflammatory bowel disease examinations.
Recently, we completed a new facility integrating Matsushima Hospital with Matsushima Clinic in May 2023, in order to further enhance and improve examinations provided to the many patients visiting us with colorectal disorders.
The new facility employs 40 specialists in internal medicine and surgery for these diseases, and features the latest equipment and systems in order to provide patients coming from inside and outside Japan with services that best fit their individual needs (as of April 2023).
Everyone at the new Matsushima Hospital is devoted to ensuring that each and every patient we see is provided with treatment that brings peace of mind.

Greetings from the assistant managing director
    Assistant Managing Director
    Haruo Nishino

Matsushima Hospital was founded in 1924 in Yokohama as a clinic specializing in anal diseases. It is now possible to discover rectal cancer and colon cancer, and as a result we established Matsushima Clinic in 1987 as a facility specializing in colonoscopy examinations. Inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease) is an intractable disease that is becoming more common, so we established an outpatient department specialized in the treatment of this disease within the clinic. Finally, in response to requests from patients, we began providing gastroendoscopy examinations, and also introduced comprehensive medical checkups, including gastroendoscopy and colonoscopy examinations.
In this way, our hospital and clinic have grown as facilities specializing in colorectal disorders over the years, and we now see many patients. In May 2023, Matsushima Hospital and Matsushima Clinic combined their expertise in anal disorders and gastroenterological endoscopy to form the new Matsushima Hospital. Our facility consists of the Anal Disorder, IBD, and Defecation Function Center (including the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Outpatient Department and Defecation Function Outpatient Department), Endoscopy Center, and Medical Checkup Center. All three work closely together, and we continue to introduce the latest medical equipment and technologies. Our mission is to ensure that our patients have a pleasant experience at our facilities. Please feel free to contact us with any suggestions or comments.

    Greetings from the director
    Director
    Nobuyoshi Miyajima

I have served as the director of Matsushima Hospital since June 2021. On May 5, Matsushima Hospital and Matsushima Clinic joined forces to form the new Matsushima Hospital. We can now offer the services of both in a single location, and this has made things much more convenient for all.
Our greatest strength is that we are a hospital specializing in colorectal diseases, and can therefore offer consistent and speedy services covering everything from accurate diagnosis to treatment using our full range of diagnosis equipment. For example, if a new patient sees us for bleeding, we can provide a general examination and can also provide on the same day an endoscopy examination of the rectum and sigmoid colon to check for common diseases. If we suspect that a patient has a perianal abscess, we can perform a transanal ultrasonographic examination to determine the extent and depth of the abscess, discover the location of the primary lesion, and even provide same-day treatment, such as opening the abscess. We also emphasize the use of manometry to evaluate anorectal functionality before and after treatment, as a means of ensuring QOL to patients who will undergo surgery. Each member of our staff is an expert on colorectal diseases, and we are committed towards providing effective diagnosis and treatment.
For functional diseases such as defecation disorder and rectal prolapse, we make use of sensory examinations and defecography in addition to anal manometry to help ensure accurate diagnosis and treatment. We are also equipped to perform rectopexy procedures for cases of rectal prolapse.
These examinations are extremely important not just for diagnosis, but for determining future treatment and surgical procedures, and we are proud to offer the range of equipment and speedy service that only a specialized hospital can provide.
Our internal medicine and surgery specialists work together to provide endoscopic diagnosis and treatment for gastrointestinal tract diseases, as well as diagnosis and treatment for inflammatory bowel disease. We strive to collaborate closely in order to provide the best treatment.
Matsushima Hospital has worked hard over the years to become a respected institution for patients and family members concerned about gastrointestinal diseases and colorectal diseases, as well as among our colleagues in the field. We will continue to evolve and provide even better treatment.

Treatment

  • Hemorrhoid treatment and surgery

Matsushima Hospital is one the top specialized hospitals in Japan for hemorrhoid treatment.
You might think that treating hemorrhoids requires surgery, but that is not necessarily the case. The majority of patients require no surgery at all, and only around 16% of newly diagnosed patients require surgical treatment. Hemorrhoids are a type of benign illness, and surgery is not required if symptoms are mild and do not significantly disrupt daily life (except for cases of anal fistulas).
However, surgery may be considered in cases where illness cannot be easily controlled using medication such as ointments or depositories. The anus is an important part of the body for handling daily defecation throughout one's life, and safety must be ensured during surgery. The three major types of surgery are outpatient surgery, short-stay inpatient surgery, and long-stay inpatient surgery.

  • Outpatient surgery

Although surgery covers a wide range of procedures both simple and complex, the goal is always treatment.
We conduct outpatient surgical procedures for a wide range of diseases, including hemorrhoids.
We select the treatment method that works best for each patient.
We can also create a treatment plan based on an individual patient's needs. Please ask the doctor for more information during your examination.

  • Admission and surgery

If outpatient surgery is not an option, the patient will require inpatient surgery. We recommend this for patients who live far from the hospital or who are concerned about recovering at home.
Matsushima Hospital is a specialized hospital with 95 beds, a full range of equipment, and expert doctors providing 24-hour support.
We also accept emergency surgery patients outside of hours and at night.

  • Postoperative observation

Patients are observed by a doctor after surgery.
Matsushima Hospital is one of the top hospitals in Japan for colonoscopy examinations, and we are proud to provide cutting-edge and high-quality medical services.

Colonoscopy Examinations

We recommend having a colonoscopy examination if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms:

  • You are frequently constipated, or have recently been constipated.
  • You suffer frequently from diarrhea.
  • You switch back and forth between having diarrhea and being constipated.
  • Your stool has become thin or thick, causing difficulty defecating.
  • You suffer periodically from abdominal pain.
  • You frequently experience abdominal swelling.
  • There are bloodstains in your stool.
  • You leave bloodstains on toilet paper.
  • You have fecal occult blood positivity.
  • You have anemia.
  • You are 40 years old or older.
  • A close relative (blood relationship within three generations) has or had stomach cancer or intestinal cancer.
  • Colonoscopy examinations

During a colonoscopy examination, a specialized camera is inserted directly inside your large intestine so that the doctor can see inside. The greatest benefit of this type of examination is that it is more accurate than fecal occult blood tests or enema X-ray examinations (barium examinations). An increasing number of people are suffering from large intestine illnesses due to lifestyle changes and switching to western-style diets. It is important to receive regular endoscopy examinations to detect any problems early on.

  • What illnesses can a colonoscopy examination find?

    • Bowel cancer
    • Bowel polyps
    • Colitis
    • Diverticulosis of colon

... and more This type of examination is especially effective in the early discovery of bowel cancer.

  • Benefits of having a colonoscopy examination

    • Bowel illness can be detected early.
    • The problem area can be removed directly, allowing for a detailed examination.
    • Bleeding due to ulcers can be treated on the spot.
    • Polyps can be removed without requiring abdominal surgery.

Regular Medical Checkups

  • We recommend having a medical checkup each year to help ensure you live a long and healthy life.

The goal of a comprehensive medical checkup is to make use of diagnosis systems, including colonoscopy examinations, to provide enhanced preventive care that is even more accurate.

  • Diagnosis using the latest medical equipment and advanced medical technology

Our facility is equipped with the latest medical equipment, including electronic endoscopes, multi-slice CTs, and real-time X-rays.
As a hospital specializing in endoscopy, we provide high-quality medical services using superior technology and based on our many years of experience.

  • Extensive health consultation organization

In addition to medical information services and comprehensive diagnosis based on examination results, we offer health consultations and advice so that you can live a healthier lifestyle.
We use computers to manage comprehensive medical checkup data, and have developed an organization to ensure that follow-ups are provided.

  • Support for secondary examinations and treatment

The Internal Medicine Department provides complete examinations and immediate support for patients requiring treatment.
We also work with trustworthy medical institutions in other specialized fields to provide patients with treatment that brings peace of mind.

  • Dedicated comprehensive medical checkup floor to relax mind and body
